Can I replace a regular single pole switch with a dimmer?
Currently there is a switch that controls an outlet. I plug a regular incandescent lamp into this outlet. Can I safely replace this switch with a dimmer switch? What problems will I run into if I use a dimmer that controls an outlet?
Anything else that gets plugged into that outlet will be subject to the dimmer switch output, like your vacuum cleaner which would burn the vacuum cleaner up. They make in line lamp dimmer switches that might be more appropriate for this situation. It just goes between the outlet and the lamp to dim the lamp. See link:
